Privacy
Your shelf is not a public dataset.
This notice explains the data Meanings Awake needs to provide private reading, grounded AI answers, billing, and account security.
Data we handle
We receive your ChatGPT sign-in identity, including the email address and, when available, name associated with that sign-in. We store your uploaded book files, extracted text and structure, search index, reading positions, selected passages, questions, answers, citations, usage counts, aggregate model-token and estimated-cost totals, and subscription status.
Payment card details are entered in Paddle's checkout and are not stored by Meanings Awake. We keep Paddle customer and subscription identifiers so you can access your membership and billing portal.
Meanings Awake is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal data. A parent or guardian who believes a child supplied data may contact us to request review and deletion.
Why we use it
We use this information to authenticate you, keep libraries separated, extract and display your books, restore reading position, retrieve relevant passages, generate cited answers, enforce spoiler boundaries and usage limits, prevent abuse, and provide subscription support.
Depending on the context and applicable law, processing is necessary to perform the service contract, comply with legal obligations, protect the service and its users, pursue legitimate operational interests, or act on consent where consent is required.
We do not sell personal data. We do not expose uploaded books as a public catalog, and subscription interval never selects a different-quality answer pipeline.
Service providers
OpenAI
Bounded selections, questions, retrieved book evidence, and necessary conversation context are sent to OpenAI to create embeddings or answers. Meanings Awake requests Responses API processing with response storage disabled and has not opted API data into model training. OpenAI states that API data is not used for training unless the customer opts in, and that default abuse-monitoring logs may be retained for up to 30 days, subject to stated legal and safety exceptions.
ChatGPT and Cloudflare
ChatGPT provides sign-in identity. The Site and its databases and file storage run on infrastructure used to host Meanings Awake. These providers process data to operate, secure, and deliver the service.
Paddle
Paddle acts as merchant of record for checkout, tax handling, payment processing, invoices, subscription management, and eligible refunds. Paddle handles checkout data as a separate controller under its own privacy terms.
Outside-book research
If an answer genuinely requires current or external knowledge, Meanings Awake may send a narrow research query to web sources. It does not intentionally send your entire book. The linked sources have their own privacy practices.
Your controls
You can delete a book from the library. That operation removes its uploaded file, extracted chapters, search index, reading position, and book-specific AI records from active application storage. You can manage or cancel billing from your account.
Send account-access, privacy, or deletion requests to support.meaningsawake@gmail.com. We may need to verify that the request comes from the account holder before acting on it.
Subject to applicable law, you may request confirmation and access, correction, portability, information about sharing, anonymization, blocking or deletion of unnecessary or unlawful data, and withdrawal of consent where processing relies on consent. Some requests may be limited where retention is needed for legal obligations, fraud prevention, security, or legal claims.
Security and retention
Every customer book and reading request is checked against the authenticated owner on the server. We retain account and subscription records while needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and prevent fraud. Uploaded books and book-specific application records are kept until you delete the book or account, subject to limited backup, security, and legal-retention periods.
No internet service can promise perfect security. We use reasonable technical safeguards and will update this notice if the service or its providers materially change.
Providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where required, those transfers are handled using the safeguards available under applicable privacy law and provider agreements.
